Goa police registered an FIR on October 11 against 300 unidentified protesters of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in the state capital Panaji. Police stated that slogans such as ‘Down with Hindutva’ were raised during the protest, which hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community and created the possibility of disturbing communal harmony.

Key Points of the FIR

  • 300 unidentified individuals were involved in the protest.
  • Slogans included phrases like ‘Down with Hindutva’.
  • Police registered the case under Sections 196 and 299 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) 2023.
  • The complainant Ramprasad Kelkar (Talegaon) filed the FIR based on a video circulated on social media.

Background and Reasons

According to the complainant, the CJP protested demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and raised issues regarding alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list and name removals. The party’s female coordinator sought permission from the North Goa Collector, which was denied. Despite this, the protest was held.

Police Action and Judicial Process

Following the disposal, the district administration detained seven protesters who entered Azad Maidan without permission. Later, the Bombay High Court released them after hearing a habeas corpus petition late on October 11.

State Government Response

Former Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the incident is under investigation and the state will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt communal harmony. He assured strict action against those involved in such activities.
