The United Nations (UN) has launched the Young Professionals Programme (YPP) for 2026, enabling qualified young individuals from various countries to build an international career. Selected candidates under this programme get the opportunity to work in entry-level positions at the UN Secretariat. Below is the key information related to this opportunity.

Key Points

  • Possibility of appointment at P-1 and P-2 level positions in YPP 2026.
  • Opportunities to work at UN centres including New York, Geneva, Nairobi, Bangkok, Vienna, and others.
  • Minimum of a three-year bachelor’s degree required to apply.
  • Applications are submitted through the UN’s Inspira portal, free of charge.
  • Selected candidates remain on a roster for three years; appointments occur when positions become vacant.

Programme Objective

The Young Professionals Programme is part of the UN’s recruitment strategy aimed at providing talented youth from diverse countries the chance to work at the UN Secretariat. The 2026 cycle will particularly focus on development, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and environmental issues.

Eligibility

The following criteria must be met to apply:

  1. A minimum of a three-year bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  2. Degrees in economics, environment, statistics, data science, social sciences, computing, business, and related fields are accepted.

Appointment and Tenure

Appointees may receive an initial fixed-term contract of two years. If performance is satisfactory, there is potential for a permanent contract or further extensions. Duty stations include major UN centres such as New York, Geneva, Nairobi, Bangkok, Vienna, and may also include field operations as required.
